Psychological-Educational Evaluation

If your child’s teachers, tutor or other educational specialist has suggested a psychological-educational (“psych-ed”) evaluation for your child, it's important to understand what that is and why it is being recommended.

A psych-ed evaluation provides valuable learning information specific to your child. It is a multi-method process covering cognitive, academic, social, emotional and attentional processing and their strengths and weaknesses. If your child is struggling, a psych-ed evaluation can give valuable insight and help answer questions about school performance, behaviors, frustrations, homework issues, and expectations. You will receive a full report that details, data, results, and  important recommendations for your child's school and home interventions that will help your child develop to their fullest potential.

Evaluations can cover most - if not all - of the below skills and competencies:

  • Cognitive processing

  • Reading

  • Reading comprehension

  • Written expression

  • Math skills

  • Listening skills

  • Spelling

  • Attention

  • Focus

  • Emotional development

  • Social development

  • Memory

What is a Psychological-Educational Evaluation?

A psychological-educational (psych-ed) evaluation is a group of assessments given to students to better understand their learning profile. It gives valuable information on how people learn, and their strengths and weaknesses. A psych-ed evaluation has four different areas that provide context: norm referenced or standardized assessments, interviews, behavioral observations and informal assessment procedures.
